The measure of the capacity of water to precipitate soap is known as its hardness. It is caused due to the presence of Calcium Ions (CA (2+) and MG (2+)). Other positive ions like of Iron, Zinc and Manganese also cause hardness. How does water become hard?

The water becomes hard by coming in contact with bivalent ions which are soluble. Calcium (CA) and Magnesium (MG) are the two main types of canons which causes hardness in the water. Calcium gets dissolved in water as water comes in contact with limestone deposits. The magnesium gets dissolved in water as water passes through dolomite and other magnesium containing minerals. As it is known that the ground water is more in contact with these mineral formations, the ground water is much harder than the surface water.

The other metals like aluminium, barium, iron, manganese and Zinc also cause hardness in the water their concentration is usually not large in the water and thus they don’t contribute significantly to the hardness in the water.
